The National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) has stated that Nigeria’s current satellite, Sat X, is inadequate for addressing security concerns due to its low-resolution imaging capabilities.
Dr. Halilu Shaba, the Director General of NASRDA, made this announcement during the 7th annual lecture of the Nigerian Institution of Space Engineers (NISEng), where there was a call to utilize space assets for security and other national challenges.
NASRDA is in the process of acquiring a high-resolution satellite that can be used for security purposes, as Sat X can only provide low-resolution images.
Plans are underway for collaboration with relevant agencies and the Presidency to acquire a high-resolution satellite capable of pinpointing and monitoring security issues, including the movement of bandits and terrorists.
Dr. Shaba emphasized the importance of having a Synthetic Aperture Radar satellite that can see through clouds and operate at night for security purposes.
The lecture’s theme highlighted the significance of space-based communication systems, weather forecasting, environmental monitoring, secure data transmission, and cybersecurity for national security.
The Nigerian space assets have been instrumental in monitoring disasters such as floods, oil spillage, and forest fires, and managing post-disaster recovery efforts.
Dr. Shaba recommended various strategies, including strategic planning, investment, space diplomacy, collaboration, international cooperation, risk management, and contingency planning, to enhance the use of space assets.
NigeriaSat-X, launched in August 2011, was initially intended for disaster management, agriculture monitoring, and security but has proven inadequate for security purposes due to its low-resolution imaging.
