Why FG Is Investigating Opay, Meta and DHL

In a move to protect people’s privacy, the Nigerian government is looking into the actions of Meta (formerly Facebook), DHL, and OPay.

If these companies are found guilty, they might have to pay a portion of their yearly earnings to the government.

This investigation started because many Nigerians complained about their personal information being misused.

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) is in charge of these investigations.

This isn’t the first time NDPC has done this; they’ve looked into other companies, banks, and universities before.

Dr. Vincent Olatunji, who leads NDPC, warned that breaking the rules about data protection would lead to penalties.

He wants to make sure Nigeria’s data stays safe.

Here’s what each company is being investigated for:

Meta is being checked for showing ads without asking people first. This might have affected about 40 million Facebook users in Nigeria.

DHL is in trouble for not following data protection rules. They might not have kept people’s information safe, as they should have.

OPay is accused of creating bank accounts for people without their permission. This is a big breach of privacy for the approximately 40 million people on the platform.
