X, formerly known as Twitter, has recently unveiled a notable addition to its platform – the capability for users to conduct live video broadcasts.Â
Notably, the company is now in the testing phase for a video game streaming feature reminiscent of popular platform Twitch.
The tech magnate Elon Musk made waves by sharing a live video game stream under his gaming alias ‘@cyb3rgam3r420.’ In this stream, he engaged in an hour of gameplay from Blizzard’s Diablo PvP arena. Presently, while the streams are accessible, options to adjust video quality remain unavailable.
It’s worth recalling that earlier this year, Elon Musk had alluded to X’s interest in entering the live video game streaming arena. This announcement coincided with significant changes made by Twitch, which directly impacted streamers who earned revenue from branded content. Consequently, several video game enthusiasts transitioned to alternative platforms such as YouTube Gaming and Facebook Live.
X’s marketing page disclosed some intriguing statistics, indicating the presence of approximately 91 million gamers on the platform. Furthermore, it highlighted a substantial volume of gaming-related tweets, with an average of 70 per second recorded between June 2020 and June 2021.
With X now positioned to challenge one of the industry’s leading video game streaming platforms, Twitch, questions arise regarding the potential impact on content creators’ earnings, especially following the introduction of X’s revenue generation program two months ago.
In addition to these developments, X has been steadily introducing new features to its platform, including ‘Articles,’ designed for sharing long-form content. CEO Linda Yaccarino has also confirmed plans to introduce native audio and video calling features, akin to WhatsApp, in the near future.
