Killers of UNIBEN Student still taking calls, 5 months after – friends allege

The mobile phone number of Miss Chinenye Promise Nwoye, an undergraduate of the University of Benin, who was reportedly strangled to death inside room 057 Akuu hotel in Abagana, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State is still on, with a male voice receiving her calls.

The late Miss Chinenye hails from Iruokpala, Ire Village in Abba, Njikoka local government area of Anambra.

Before she was lured to the hotel where she was allegedly strangled to death on the 27th day of August 2020, Miss Nwoye, as TNC gathered, was on scholarship at the University of Benin, (UNIBEN), and had opted for computer lessons at a neighboring town, following the outbreak of COVID-19, for which schools were shut down.

The deceased mother and a member of her family fellowship, one Jude Okoye, had narrated to the TNC correspondent in Anambra, how they rushed to the hotel shortly after the deceased informed them via phone calls that she was in danger.

They had revealed that the deceased had told them that she needed her ATM pin number to free herself from ‘kidnappers’, only to meet her dead in a way suggestive of strangulation.

Though Miss Nwoye has been laid to rest in December 2020, her parents, who had accused the Hotel management of complicity in their daughter’s death, said legal proceedings on the gruesome murder of their daughter is still ongoing at the State’s High Court.

TNC had following a discreet investigation, discovered that the hotel remained very porous, while there is no form of documentation for persons who lodge at the hotel as they just come, pay and were handed keys to the rooms.

Meanwhile, friends and course mates of the deceased, who opted to be anonymous while speaking to TNC correspondent, said a male voice is usually heard at the other end of phone conversations, claiming ownership of the deceased phone number.

They expressed worry that nothing has been done to unmask the persons behind the alleged murder of the young undergraduate, months after her young life was cut short.

It would be recalled that when contacted on the incident earlier, the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Haruna Mohammed said one suspect was arrested over the incident, adding that the case was transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department, CID, for discreet investigation.

TNC is yet to receive any further Police update on the matter.
