Rivers CP arraigns slain monarch’s sons over alleged defamatory comments

Two sons of the late paramount ruler  of Luuwa in Khana Local Government Area, Robert Loolo have been arraigned by the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Joseph Mukan, for using derogatory and defamatory words in the petition and text messages they sent to him and former Member representing Rivers State South East constituency, Senator Lee Maeba.

One of the sons of late paramount ruler, Kingdom in a petition addressed to the Inspector General of Police, had alleged that CP Mukan and his men at the CP monitoring team have refused to carry out the arrest of some persons fingered in the alleged crime.

He also alleged that the Police Commissioner is doing the biddings of Senator Maeba who he accused in a petition of providing a shield for the alleged killers of his father.

“We urge the IGP to take over the case because the Rivers State Police Command under CP Joseph Mukan has refused to make an arrest of some persons mentioned by the boy who bought my father’s handset. Our family is convinced that youths loyal to Senator Lee Maeba are responsible for the kidnap and murder of their father,” he had alleged.

The late Robert Loolo was kidnapped and murdered by unknown gunmen in his own town June last year and over a year after, the family is accusing the Police in Rivers State for not doing enough to arrest some persons whom they have identified as the killers.

On Monday, Douglas and Kingdom, two sons of the deceased, who were arrested over the weekend, were arraigned before a Magistrate Court in Rivers State on a two-count charge for petitioning the Commissioner of Police and sending a text message to Senator Maeba.

The charged showed that the accused were arraigned because the content of the petition is alleged to be derogatory and defamatory on the persons of the Commissioner of Police and Senator Maeba as well as false in nature.

After the arguments during their arraignment in the magistrate court, Chief Magistrate Chinelo Odili granted the duo bail to the tune of two hundred and fifty thousand naira each and a surety in like sum.

The matter was later adjourned to the 28th of this month for a hearing.

Meanwhile, lawyer to the family, Henry Ekine has said for arresting and detaining his clients despite the existing suit against the Police, CP Joseph Mukan has shown that he does not have respect to the rights of the citizens.
