APC Crisis: Oshiomhole, Tinubu’s Faction Braces For Showdown With Buhari Over Giadom’s NEC

—

A seeming desperate move by President Muhammadu Buhari to resolve the leadership crisis of his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), on Thursday with a military regime-like decree has hit the rocks.

Members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party, who the Buhari proposal flushed out of the office at a questionable National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting summoned by the Victor Giadom faction of the troubled APC have threatened to drag President Buhari to court.

If the aggrieved APC chieftains challenged their sack in court, it will mean that President Buhari’s appeal to the warring factions has gone unheeded. The Nigerian leader had warned that continued political antagonism in the party could lead to its destruction.

He accordingly appealed to the warring factions to withdraw all pending litigations against one another, and settle for internal conciliation.

This reporter reported on Thursday that the decision of the Giadom NEC may not resolve the crisis in the party because the credibility of the faction that summoned the Presidential Villa meeting was in doubt.

Some legal luminaries including a top presidential aide like Prof. Itse Sagay had warned President Buhari against gracing the Giadom NEC meeting, claiming it was ‘’illegal’’.

Now, 18 members of the sacked NWC are kicking against the decision of the Giadom NEC meeting. The meeting was supposed to be a virtual one but some members attended in person along with Buhari.

Equally, the political camp of the APC ceremonial National Leader and former Lagos State Governor, Bola Tinubu, is firing at President Buhari, accusing him of not being grateful for the over N35 billion their principal allegedly spent to make a president.

Before now, it has been reported by this reporter that there was also another dimension to the APC crisis aimed at aborting Tinubu’s alleged 2023 presidential ambition. Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State has been very conspicuous in his opposition to Tinubu’s presidential dream.

It seems Transportation Minister, Chibuike Amaechi, has joined forces with others to cut the ex-Lagos governor to size. Giadom, whose faction President Buhari used to hammer the Adams Oshiomhole NWC is an unshaken political associate of Amaechi.

Perhaps, some APC governors are dealing Tinubu a political blow for humiliating one of their own, former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos, and for not intervening for Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State in his feud with Oshiomhole.

At the moment, guarded whispers have it that all is not well between Tinubu and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. The governor is reportedly not pleased with Tinubu’s “overbearing demands and his attempt to control his administration.”

In the meantime, the 18 NWC members who are loyal to Oshiomhole in a statement by a factional APC Acting National Chairman, Hillard Eta, and acting National Secretary, Waziri Bulama, are saying the Giadom NEC meeting was illegally convened by a suspended National Secretary of the party.

According to Eta and Bulama, the 18 unyielding NWC members are already consulting with their lawyers and other stakeholders: “The NWC of APC wishes to reiterate its earlier position that Victor Giadom has no authority whatsoever to convene a meeting of the NEC of our great party.

‘’Article 25(B) of the constitution of the APC is explicit that only the National Chairman or the NWC is given the prerogative of summoning meetings of the NEC of the party either for statutory quarterly meetings or for emergency meetings. The same provision of the constitution makes it compulsory for notice of a minimum of 14 days in respect of statutory quarterly meetings and seven days in respect of emergency meetings.

“We note that Giadom had convened and conducted a virtual meeting purportedly to be a NEC meeting of our party wherein certain far-reaching resolutions were purportedly reached. While the NWC is studying the unfolding drama, it will be consulting with stakeholders and team of lawyers on the next line of action.

“Therefore, all members of our great party and concerned Nigerians are urged to remain calm pending the outcome of the consultations.”

In support of this position are the National Vice Chairman, North West, Inuwa Abdulkadir; National Vice Chairman, South-West, Pastor Bankole Oluwajana; and National Vice Chairman, North Central, Alhaji Ahmed Wambal.

This is playing out as the new Caretaker Committee Chairman of the party, Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State, has pledged to do justice to every party member and ensure the current challenges were amicably resolved.

Other members of the caretaker committee and extraordinary National Convention Planning Committee include: Governor Gboyega Oyetola of Osun State (South West), Senator Ken Nnamani (South East), Stella Okorete (Women Representative), Governor Sani Bello of Niger State (North Central), Dr. James Lalu for the physically challenged, Senator Abubakar Yusuf (Senate Representative) and Rep. Akinyemi Olaide, representing House of Representatives, David Lyon (South-South), Abba Ari (North West), Prof. Tahir Mamman (North East), Ismail Ahmed (Youth Leader) and Senator Akpan Udoedehe, the Committee Secretary.

Interestingly, Governor Buni is a former APC National Secretary of the party. For him, the committee is a capable team to deliver the job. “After being two-time National Secretary of the party, I can say I know the party very well. I want to assure every APC member that we will do justice to everyone because we have a capable team.

“I am a team player and I am here to manage a crisis, and if you do not manage crisis, crisis will manage you. So, without justice, there will be no peace. So, I am ready to do justice to every APC member”, he says.

Continuing, he said NEC is the highest organ of the party, except the convention, and it can function for convention in-between, so any decision taken by NEC is the final decision.

“NEC has directed that every member in court should withdraw his suit. Party will carry all members along, especially the leaders of the APC. Many of them have paid their dues to the party, so we will carry them along”, he adds.

Following the fallout of the Giadom NEC meeting at the Presidential Villa, the Nigeria Police on Thursday removed the blockade on the national secretariat of the APC after sealing it off.

The APC secretariat was unsealed a few minutes after the NEC meeting of the party that was presided over by the President Buhari that dissolved the Oshiomhole-led NWC and replaced it with the Governor Buni Caretaker Committee.

Buni had a brief stopover at the secretariat. He went to exchanged pleasantries with members of staff, most of whom were his colleagues when he served as the national scribe before he was elected governor in 2019.

His committee is expected to organise a National Convention that will reset the sinking party.

Improve welfare of Nigerian Teachers

I was and I am a teacher. I was a Parents Teachers Association hired teacher at Oba Akinbiyi High School (II), Mokola, Ibadan in 1997. Apart from that stint, I also taught briefly at a private secondary school during my National Youth Service at Asaba, Delta State as well as at another private secondary school at Akowonjo area of Lagos state around 2001 / 2002. My late father, Deacon Isaac Oyeniyi Ojo taught for about 40 years across several primary schools in Oyo and Osun sates and retired as a headmaster in 1995. At present, I don’t just teach but train people across various democratic institutions namely election management bodies (INEC and SIECs), political parties, media, national and state legislative assemblies, police, and civil society organisations. Information gleaned from the website of UNESCO says “World Teachers’ Day is held annually on 5 October to celebrate all teachers around the globe. It commemorates the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, which sets benchmarks regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers, and standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment, and teaching and learning conditions. In 2026, the Day marks the 60th anniversary of the Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers.” In Nigeria, this year's celebration focused on five interconnected pillars: innovation, mobility, Artificial Intelligence, inclusion, and professional excellence. The Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, announced that the selection process for the 2026 World Teachers' Day awards was digitised to promote transparency, accountability, and efficiency. The celebration includes a symposium, a march-past featuring state flags and cultural attire, and the recognition of 14 awardees, including the first, second, and third best teachers receiving prestigious car gifts, while the best Federal Unity College received a bus. Other prizes include laptops. In commemoration of the World Teachers Day, Dr. Akin Ayeni and I were guests on a breakfast programme on Ekiti 91.5 FM, Ado Ekiti last Monday where we dissected the plights of Nigerian teachers and proffered solutions to them. The host was Ademola Adeleke. I enumerated some of the plights of Nigerian teachers to include: Low wages, insecurity, quackery, inadequate classrooms, lecture theatres, libraries and laboratories, high turnover of staff especially in private schools, high workloads, disrespects from parents, students and even government. I made a proverb on the programme. Elo ni teacher ngba, ti o ntuto s’owo ka’wo osu (meaning, how much does a teacher earn that he or she needs to use saliva to count salary). This was a random joke even among teachers when they used to collect their salary in cash. This day, they receive their wages via online money transfer. The proverb however is meant to drive home the paltry nature of the salaries and wages of teachers cum lecturers. I recall the sticker produced by Academic Staff Union of Universities many years ago which has the inscription “My take home pay cannot take me home”. That’s very instructive. On issue of insecurity, according to Daily Trust of October 1, 2022, “The registrar of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, Professor Josiah Ajiboye, said attacks on schools by insurgents have claimed the lives of more than 2,295 teachers in the North East between 2009 and 2022.” The PUNCH in its June 5, 2026 online edition reported that “An estimated 603 students and teachers have been kidnapped in seven mass abductions across schools in Nigeria between March 2024 and May 2026 under President Bola Tinubu, despite the N145bn Safe Schools Initiative.” Recall that on May 15, 2026, a total of 46 persons – seven teachers and 39 students – were abducted from Community High School Ahoro-Esinele and Yawota Baptist Nursery and Primary School in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. Thankfully, most of them were rescued though two teachers were murdered by the bandits.  Michael Oyedokun, was reportedly beheaded, while John Olaleye, was shot dead during the attack. It is noteworthy that some university lecturers have also been abducted in the past. The heavy workloads and low wages have resulted into brain drain and high turnover of teaching staff across our academic institutions. Many education graduates don’t want to teach. The lecturers in tertiary institutions are leaving in droves for greener pasters abroad. Many teachers today take the job as a last resort when better options are not available. Many of the private schools recruit untrained teachers. They side step the federal government policy of having every teacher certified by Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria. Recall that the TRCN regulates the teaching profession in Nigeria by setting standards, accrediting teacher education programmes, registering qualified teachers, and enforcing professional ethics.  It establishes national minimum standards for teacher education and monitors teacher training institutions, including Colleges of Education, university faculties, polytechnic schools of education, and the National Teachers Institute. Unlike in the 20th century when teachers in Nigeria were widely respected and seen as mini-God, in contemporary times, there have been situation where pupils and students openly abuse teachers, bully them and even beat them up. Some irresponsible parents have even gone to school to harass and molest teachers for caning or meting out corporal punishments to their wards and children. Thus, many teachers now work in an atmosphere of fear. Mrs. Comfort Fasunwon is a multiple award-winning teacher in Ondo State, here is an excerpt from what she wrote on her Facebook wall in commemoration of the 2026 World Teachers Day “To my fellow teachers, today.  Teaching is not always easy. There are days when the workload is heavy, resources may be limited, and the results of our efforts may not be immediately visible. Yet we continue to show up, teach, encourage, correct, inspire and believe in our students. Sometimes, the greatest reward of a teacher is not a certificate or trophy. It is seeing a child who once struggled begin to understand. It is watching a student grow in confidence. It is meeting a former student years later and hearing the words, “Ma or sir, you made a difference in my life.” My plead to government at all level as well as private schools’ owners is to ensure that their schools are well resourced and staff welfare is made paramount. Professionalism should be their watchwords. Teachers’ rewards shouldn’t be in heaven; a foretaste of that should be here on earth. Best wishes to fellow teachers and nation builders. Remember the popular song that says “Anyone who hates teachers will homeschool his or her  child” I.G: @jideojong
