‘This Is Us’ Writer Jas Waters Passes Away

Los Angeles TV writer and journalist Jas Waters, who was known for her work on series such as NBC’s “This Is Us,” Jim Carrey’s “Kidding” and VH1’s “The Breaks,” committed suicide in her Hollywood home. She was 39.

According to The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s office, Waters died on June 9 by hanging.

Jas worked as a staff writer on 18 episodes of “This Is Us” between 2017 and 2018. She also wrote for the shows Kidding, Hood Adjacent with James Davis, and The Breaks, and received a story by credit for the 2019 movie What Men Want.

Before she became a television writer, Jas was a journalist who wrote for Vibe magazine and co-starred on the 2013 VH1 reality series The Gossip Game.

Waters’ This Is Us writing colleagues shared their grief on Twitter: “In our time together, Jas left her mark on us and ALL over the show. She was a brilliant storyteller and a force of nature.“

This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman also reacted to the loss of Waters on Wednesday, tweeting “This news took my breath away. Jas was absolutely brilliant and had so many stories still to tell. She made an indelible mark on our show and my heart breaks for her loved ones. RIP @JasFly.”
