Teachers Shut Schools Across Oyo Over Abducted Colleagues, Pupils
The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has directed all public primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State to embark on an indefinite strike beginning Monday, June 1, 2026, in protest against the continued captivity of abducted teachers and pupils in Oriire Local Government Area.
The industrial action follows the abduction of 46 pupils and their teachers by suspected terrorists in the Ahoro-Esinele and Yawota communities, a development that has sparked widespread concern over the safety of learners and education workers across the state.
In a statement jointly signed by the Oyo State NUT Chairman, Hassan Fatai, and Secretary, Salami Olukayode, the union said the prolonged detention of the victims has created fear among teachers, disrupted learning activities, discouraged school attendance, and heightened anxiety in affected communities.
According to the union, the strike is aimed at drawing urgent attention to the worsening security situation and compelling government authorities and security agencies to intensify efforts to secure the safe release of the abducted teachers and pupils.
The NUT directed all public school teachers across the state to comply fully with the strike action and remain at home until further notice.
