40 Feared Dead as Canoe Carrying Rice Farmers Overturns in Sokoto

What began as a routine journey to the rice fields quickly turned into tragedy on Thursday when a canoe carrying farmers capsized in Gorau town, Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

No fewer than 40 people are feared dead, while six others, including the village head, were reportedly rescued after the boat overturned while crossing a stream to access the farms.

Eyewitnesses said most of those on board were between 10 and 15 years old. The passengers reportedly included farm owners and labourers hired to harvest rice.

“So far, we have recovered about 40 bodies, while six people, including the village head, were rescued,” an eyewitness said.

According to the eyewitness, the canoe capsized shortly after take-off, leaving passengers struggling in the water.

Rescue operations are still ongoing, with local divers searching for those still missing and recovering bodies,” he said.

The exact number of people aboard the canoe remains unclear as rescue efforts continue, with fears that the death toll could rise.
