Anambra Building Collapse Leaves Several Injured as Rescue Efforts Continue

A yet to be ascertained numbers of occupants have sustained injuries following the collapse of a three story building in Amaokpala, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra.

The building which collapsed Sunday night is a private property housing students of the Federal Polytechnic Oko and non-students alike.

Amaokpala is a neighbouring community to Oko town.

Though no official figures have been released, those who sustained injuries have been taken to hospital for medical attention while rescue operation was still ongoing.

Mr Chijioke Ojukwu, the Anambra Commissioner for Urban Planning, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday.

Ojukwu said rescue operation was ongoing and that detail of the collapse including date and number of casualties would be made available soon

Dr Celestne Oguegbu, the Public Relations Officer of FedPoly Oko also told NAN that contrary to some reports, the incident neither took place within the school nor the community hosting the institution.

Oguegbu said the school was not in session as students had concluded their examinations and were expected to have gone home.

He however said that the Rector and top management staff of the institution had visited the site to assist in the rescue and ascertain the fate of students resident in the building.

The building that collapsed is not in Oko but Amaokpala, a neighbouring community.

Though the polytechnic is not involved, the Rector was at the site earlier this morning in company of the Chief Security Officer and other staff including myself to assist in the rescue effort and ascertain the fate of our students.

”I can confirm to you that no death has been recorded from that incident as at the time, those who sustained injuries have been taken for medical attention and rescue is still going on,” he said
