2. The Court of Appeal in Abuja has ordered former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello to present himself for arraignment and restrained him from taking any further action in his case until he complies. The court also overturned a previous judgment by the Kogi State High Court. Bello is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for alleged criminal diversion and money laundering involving over N80 billion during his tenure as governor. Despite attempts by the EFCC to arrest him, reports suggest Bello has been hiding in the Kogi State Government House. The charges against him include the illegal conversion of state funds and laundering money through associates.
3. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has warned that it may commence a nationwide strike starting at midnight on Tuesday if its President, Joe Ajaero, is harmed following his police summons. Ajaero was called in for questioning on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, over allegations of terrorism financing and other charges. This follows a police raid on the NLC’s national secretariat in Abuja on July 7, 2024, during which the police claimed they were searching for seditious materials. The NLC views the investigation as politically motivated and has instructed its members to prepare for industrial action. While the NLC agreed to honor the police invitation, it requested a postponement to August 29, 2024, and condemned the government’s actions as efforts to intimidate and destabilize the labor movement.
