2027: Why the North Is Angry With Tinubu — Baba-Ahmed

—

The National Chairman of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has said northern Nigerians are angry with President Bola Tinubu over what he described as the President’s failure to fulfil his campaign promises.

Baba-Ahmed said the dissatisfaction with Tinubu’s administration was not limited to the North, stressing that Nigerians across the country were unhappy with the President’s performance.

He made the remarks on Tuesday during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today monitored by The News Chronicle, where he assessed the administration’s record ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

“The North is angry with Tinubu. He came here on the promise to fix a lot of the things that were wrong, and he didn’t,” Baba-Ahmed said.

According to the PRP chairman, the growing discontent stems from the perception that the President has failed to address the country’s longstanding challenges despite the promises made before assuming office.

He argued that the anger directed at Tinubu was not necessarily a regional grievance but reflected wider dissatisfaction among Nigerians who expected his administration to tackle the country’s problems.

“It’s nothing to do with being northern at all. There are a lot of elite, there are a lot of Nigerians who are angry with Tinubu because he’s not listening to anybody,” he said.

Baba-Ahmed added that the North shared the same concerns as other parts of the country over the administration’s performance.

“I can tell you, the North is not angry with Tinubu because he’s not listening to them. The North is angry with Tinubu like other Nigerians are angry with Tinubu,” he said.

The PRP chairman also gave a damning assessment of Tinubu’s performance, describing the President as a failure after about three and a half years in power.

He acknowledged that Tinubu inherited a country grappling with poverty, weak institutions and insecurity but argued that the length of time the President had spent in office made it necessary to assess his own record.

“Tinubu inherited Nigeria, but what has he done with it? He inherited a poor country; he inherited weak institutions; he inherited poverty and insecurity,” Baba-Ahmed said.

“We don’t blame him, but he’s been in power for three and a half years. He is a failure.”

He also accused the President of being detached from the concerns of ordinary Nigerians and failing to do enough to address the challenges confronting the country.

Baba-Ahmed’s comments come as political parties and opposition figures position themselves ahead of the 2027 general election, when Tinubu is expected to seek another term on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

His remarks point to the political risks the administration could face if public dissatisfaction over its performance translates into votes against the ruling party.

The North remains a major political battleground because of its electoral significance, making the level of support Tinubu commands in the region an important consideration in the coming contest.

However, Baba-Ahmed’s assessment represents his political position and does not, by itself, establish the extent of opposition to Tinubu among northern voters.

With the 2027 election approaching, the central question is whether the administration can convince Nigerians that it has made sufficient progress on its promises or whether voters will use the ballot to express their dissatisfaction.
