The Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) has rejected any political arrangement that could undermine the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections, setting the stage for a potential clash with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and his proposed Rainbow Coalition in Rivers State.
Wike, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with close political ties to the APC-led federal government, has championed what he described as a “Rainbow Coalition” in Rivers State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The arrangement is expected to bring together politicians from both the APC and PDP to work toward shared political interests in the state.
However, the APC governors have drawn a clear line, insisting that their allegiance and campaign support will remain exclusively with candidates flying the APC flag.
The position was announced after a closed-door meeting of the Progressive Governors’ Forum in Abuja on Monday, September 14, where the APC chairman of the forum and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, read the communique to journalists.
Uzodimma said the governors unanimously agreed not to support any political alliance or arrangement capable of weakening the APC or undermining its candidates at any level.
“The Forum unanimously resolved that its members will not participate, support or endorse any political alliance or arrangement capable of undermining the re-election of Mr President, weakening the APC or adversely affecting any candidate of the party at all levels,” Uzodimma said.
He explained that the governors would not back candidates outside the APC, stressing that the party’s candidates were being sponsored by the APC and would therefore receive the governors’ full campaign support.
“In other words, the forum has no intention to support any candidate at any level that is not an APC candidate, because our candidates are being sponsored by our party,” he said.
According to Uzodimma, the governors’ campaign commitment is “exclusively to all APC candidates.”
He added that the forum would not entertain any arrangement capable of creating confusion, divided loyalty, or conflicting interest within the party.
The declaration could put the APC governors on a collision course with Wike’s proposed coalition in Rivers State, where the minister has continued to maintain political influence despite remaining a PDP member.
With the 2027 elections drawing closer, the competing political arrangements could further deepen the battle for control of Rivers State and test the relationship between Wike and the APC leadership.
