President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to democracy and the rule of law, vowing to leave a legacy of unity, stability, and good governance for Nigeria.
He made the assurance during an inter-faith breaking of the fast with members of the National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress and the leadership of the Inter-Party Advisory Council at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, in a statement made available to The News Chronicle.
Tinubu emphasized that strong institutions and credible electoral processes are fundamental to national cohesion.
“Direct primaries give party members real opportunities to choose their representatives. Democracy thrives when the majority have their say, and the minority are heard,” the President said, recounting his own decades-long struggle for democratic governance, including detention, protests, and exile.
“I am a die-hard democrat. I followed the leadership destiny that God has chosen for me. The principles I believe in, unity, democracy, and the rule of law, will live and die with me. There’s no threat from any democrat under my watch,” Tinubu declared.
The President also reaffirmed his commitment to free and fair elections. “I am a registered voter, and I will always toe the democratic line. Democracy is voluntary, it is enshrined, and I am here to listen and uphold it,” he said.
Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, Chairman of the APC, lauded Tinubu for his leadership in managing Nigeria’s diverse society and pledged the party’s full support for his vision.
“The invitation to break fast with party leaders and IPAC is a testament to your inclusive leadership. We stand with you as a party,” Yilwatda said.
Yusuf Dantalle, IPAC Chairman, used the occasion to urge the President to reconsider linking the National Identity Number (NIN) to voter registration, warning that many eligible voters risk disenfranchisement under the 2026 Electoral Law. He also called for the restoration of INEC’s financial support for political parties.
Dantalle further announced a new film, “Unbroken Democracy”, chronicling 26 years of Nigerian democracy. Supported by Hope Uzodimma, Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, the movie is set to premiere soon at the State House.
