2027: SDP Candidate Adebayo Demands Free, Fair Polls, Warns Democracy at Risk

The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Adewole Adebayo, has called for free, fair and credible elections in 2027, warning that Nigeria’s democracy could be threatened if the country fails to guarantee credible polls.

In an interview on ARISE NEWS monitored by The News Chronicle, Adebayo stated that issues such as fuel subsidy were not central to the major challenges confronting the country.

He said the survival of democracy remained a more pressing concern, particularly amid what he described as the “dictatorship” of President Bola Tinubu.

“We have more areas of agreement than minor areas of disagreement. What I know is that subsidy and some of these issues are not central to the challenges the country is facing.

“The real challenge is democracy itself. Democracy may end if we allow the burden of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s dictatorship to continue.

“It may end if we cannot guarantee free, fair and credible elections, or if we continue to generate voter apathy because we cannot articulate a clear alternative before Nigerians of what the country can become in a short order,” Adebayo said.

The SDP candidate stressed the need for political leaders and opposition parties to present Nigerians with a clear alternative capable of restoring confidence in the democratic process.

He also warned that continued voter apathy could undermine democracy, urging stakeholders to ensure that Nigerians have confidence in the electoral system ahead of the 2027 general elections.
