Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has urged Northerners to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election in the 2027 presidential election, saying the South should be allowed to complete an eight-year presidential tenure.
Yusuf made the call on Sunday at the Kano Government House while flagging off the distribution of 50 branded vehicles donated by High Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, to support grassroots mobilisation for the All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 elections.
The governor said the North had already completed an eight-year presidential tenure under former President Muhammadu Buhari, who served from 2015 to 2023.
He argued that, based on what he described as an understanding on the rotation of presidential power between the North and South, Tinubu should be allowed to serve a second term to complete the South’s eight-year period.
Yusuf said, “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is serving Nigeria for the last three and a half years. Now we are coming for another election. Therefore, it is our responsibility as Nigerians to agree that the President should be re-elected for another term of office.”
He added, “At the end of that, power will come back to the North. And only Allah knows who will be the President of Nigeria.”
The governor particularly appealed to Northerners and residents of the North-West to support Tinubu’s re-election bid.
“We have to exercise patience. May Allah get us through to 2031,” he said.
Yusuf also called for peaceful and issue-based campaigns ahead of the 2027 elections, urging politicians to avoid character assassination and focus on their achievements, programmes and plans for the electorate.
He said campaigns should centre on development and the welfare of Nigerians, rather than personal attacks.
The 50 vehicles donated by Tompolo are expected to be deployed to support APC structures and grassroots mobilisation across Kano State’s 44 local government areas.
