The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has said the possible return of former President Goodluck Jonathan to the 2027 presidential race would significantly alter Nigeria’s political calculations and force major parties to rethink their strategies.
The party made the statement following reports that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), through its interim factional National Working Committee led by Tanimu Turaki (SAN), granted Jonathan automatic clearance as the party’s sole presidential aspirant for the 2027 election.
Reacting via its official account, the ADC said Jonathan’s potential candidacy would shake the political landscape, affecting both the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and opposition parties preparing for the next general election.
According to the party, Jonathan remains a political figure with strong national recognition, noting that while some Nigerians remember him for conceding defeat peacefully in 2015, others remain critical of his administration.
The ADC further argued that Jonathan’s return signals the re-emergence of old political forces ahead of what may become one of Nigeria’s fiercest elections since 1999.
The party also stated that Jonathan’s perceived moderation, national appeal, and political network could present a fresh challenge to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu amid public concerns over inflation, insecurity, and the rising cost of living.
