2026 Argungu Fishing Festival Begins Dramatically as Fishermen Rush River Ahead of Tinubu’s Arrival

The 2026 Argungu International Fishing Festival has officially commenced at Mata Fada, the historic fishing arena in Argungu, Kebbi State, attracting thousands of fishermen, tourists and cultural enthusiasts from across Nigeria and beyond.
Excitement peaked on Saturday when a large number of the anticipated 40,000 fishermen surged into the river shortly after noon, even before the formal opening ceremony and the arrival of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The spontaneous start took spectators by surprise, many of whom had gathered as early as 7:00am to witness what is regarded as one of Africa’s most iconic cultural festivals.
Correspondents at the venue reported that security operatives were briefly overwhelmed by the sheer size and enthusiasm of the crowd as participants rushed into the water, clutching their traditional fishing tools in a dramatic display of skill, strength and endurance. After about 30 minutes, security personnel regained control of the situation by guiding the fishermen away from the river.
The Argungu Fishing Festival, which dates back to 1934, is rooted in a centuries-old tradition originally introduced to mark peace between the Sokoto Caliphate and the Kebbi Kingdom.
Over the decades, it has evolved into an international cultural spectacle featuring fishing competitions, traditional music and dance, wrestling, arts and crafts, while also promoting tourism and local commerce.
Widely seen as a symbol of unity, cultural pride and economic opportunity, the festival attracts visitors from around the world and serves as a platform for showcasing Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage.
This year’s edition is expected to host high-profile dignitaries, vibrant cultural troupes and heightened security measures as authorities work to ensure safety and order following the dramatic opening moments.
