2023: PDP will have transparent primaries in Delta – Okowa

—

Delta State Governor, Senator (Dr) Ifeanyi Okowa, has assured members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state of free, fair and transparent primary elections ahead of 2023 general elections.

The governor gave the assurance while addressing PDP faithful at a mega rally organised by the party in Delta at the Cenotaph, Asaba, on Saturday, and affirmed that PDP remained one united family in the state.

He assured that leaders of the party in the state would ensure that primaries for all elective positions were free and credible.

He said that the massive mobilisation for the rally showed that PDP was ready to rescue Nigeria from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and advised aspirants in other political parties not to waste their money to contest elections in Delta.

“I give thanks to God for what is happening here today and I thank our leaders in the PDP, our state and local government executives, our youths and women for the massive mobilisation for this rally.

“It is by the grace of God and through their hands that we have mobilised to make a statement today across Nigeria that PDP is prepared to take over this nation.

“One good thing about us in the PDP is that we are one family, we are not like the other people where one man takes it all. Here in PDP, we are one family.

“We work as a family with the love of God but in the other parties, they are always fighting themselves,” the governor said.

He thanked Deltans for their great support and cooperation with his administration, saying “we have been doing a great job as Deltans, but it is because Deltans voted us into power and that is why we have the opportunity to do the great job that we are doing for our state.

“It is because you have always supported us that is why when we win, we win very well. We won well in 2015 and in 2019, and in 2023 we will finish work again.

“We are advising those who want to run in other political parties not to waste their time and money because there is no space for them in Delta”.

Okowa remarked that his administration had done quite a lot since inception, explaining that he had appointed many youths into government and that never in the history of the state had youths been so appointed into various offices in the state.

“Never in the history of this state have youths been so empowered through our various empowerment and entrepreneurship programmes.

“We have done well for our women and we will continue to do more for them, and let me make it clear that even as we play politics, we will continue to do the work that you asked us to do,” he said.

On infrastructure, the governor assured Deltans that his administration would not slow down in constructing more roads, saying “until I leave office in May, 2023, we will continue to build more and more roads and for those who haven’t been to Asaba in recent times, when you see our new State Secretariat you will be proud that you are a Deltan.

“All our achievements are the collective efforts of all Deltans because you gave us the peace to work and we can’t thank you enough.”

He advised aspirants to control their followers, noting that there was no need for any fight as the party remained one big united family.

“We are one family in PDP; we cannot fight and we will never fight; at the appropriate time, it will be well with us.

“But, one thing I have always promised and I still promise today is that there will always be free and fair primaries; so, there is no room to fight.

“There is no room to quarrel, let us work together as one family that we are and ensure that PDP stays continuously as a family,” he stressed.

In his address, former Governor of the state, Chief James Ibori, lauded Governor Okowa for his leadership of the state and the party, and declared that he would continue to support him to succeed beyond his tenure as governor of the state.

“I thank you for the job you are doing in Delta and at the national level for the benefit of Nigerians.

“I most especially thank you for what I am seeing here today because you have done very well in Delta State and I cannot be more proud that you are our governor today.

“You are leading us very well and it is our duty, and we are all committed to say that you will finish very strong and at the end of the day we will all gather to thank God for you.

“From what I can see here you have provided an atmosphere for a free and fair contest and you have provided an atmosphere for people’s aspirations to be heard without intimidation whatsoever.

“Of a truth, this was the philosophy behind the formation of this great party when I said in 1998 that democracy is about opening up the space and environment for everybody to aspire to whatever he or she believes in and I thank you for continuing with that vision.

“I want to thank you on behalf of teeming members of our party thank you and pray that God will

continue to guide you as you lead us in the years ahead,’’ Ibori said.

He added that he personally didn’t “believe that your leadership will terminate at the end of your tenure as governor; I don’t believe that.

“I have come to say that you have earned your strides and your strides will continue to carry you on by the grace of God.

“On behalf of my one vote, my unit in Ogharefe, Ethiope West Local Government Area, I want to commit and dedicate myself to the service of PDP Delta State and Nigeria at large”.

Welcoming defectors to the party earlier, Chairman of PDP in the state, Chief Kingsley Esiso, said that the rally was primarily organised to welcome decampees from APC and other political parties.

Esiso said that the massive exodus from APC was a testimony that the party has failed Nigerians in all ramifications.

“I can tell you that the primary purpose of this rally is to reduce the opposition party in Delta State by 90 per cent.

“My heart is full of joy and a testimony that APC is a failed political party and the people of Delta have come to realise that APC has only come to bring us economic hardship, poverty, banditry, kidnapping and failed promises.

“It is therefore not a surprise that every reasonable member of the APC is jumping ship to join us.

“Today, we are harvesting many of their leaders from different local government areas and we are celebrating this victory for our great party,” he said.

Other leaders who spoke at the rally included, Deputy Governor, Mr Kingsley Otuaro, Minority Leader, House of Representatives, Chief Ndudi Elumelu, Senator James Manager and former Senate Chief Whip, Senator Stella Omu.

The defectors to the PDP, who were led by former Chairman of APC in the state, Chief Cyril Ogodo pledged to work for the PDP to ensure that APC was no more in the state.

Improve welfare of Nigerian Teachers

I was and I am a teacher. I was a Parents Teachers Association hired teacher at Oba Akinbiyi High School (II), Mokola, Ibadan in 1997. Apart from that stint, I also taught briefly at a private secondary school during my National Youth Service at Asaba, Delta State as well as at another private secondary school at Akowonjo area of Lagos state around 2001 / 2002. My late father, Deacon Isaac Oyeniyi Ojo taught for about 40 years across several primary schools in Oyo and Osun sates and retired as a headmaster in 1995. At present, I don’t just teach but train people across various democratic institutions namely election management bodies (INEC and SIECs), political parties, media, national and state legislative assemblies, police, and civil society organisations. Information gleaned from the website of UNESCO says “World Teachers’ Day is held annually on 5 October to celebrate all teachers around the globe. It commemorates the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, which sets benchmarks regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers, and standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment, and teaching and learning conditions. In 2026, the Day marks the 60th anniversary of the Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers.” In Nigeria, this year's celebration focused on five interconnected pillars: innovation, mobility, Artificial Intelligence, inclusion, and professional excellence. The Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, announced that the selection process for the 2026 World Teachers' Day awards was digitised to promote transparency, accountability, and efficiency. The celebration includes a symposium, a march-past featuring state flags and cultural attire, and the recognition of 14 awardees, including the first, second, and third best teachers receiving prestigious car gifts, while the best Federal Unity College received a bus. Other prizes include laptops. In commemoration of the World Teachers Day, Dr. Akin Ayeni and I were guests on a breakfast programme on Ekiti 91.5 FM, Ado Ekiti last Monday where we dissected the plights of Nigerian teachers and proffered solutions to them. The host was Ademola Adeleke. I enumerated some of the plights of Nigerian teachers to include: Low wages, insecurity, quackery, inadequate classrooms, lecture theatres, libraries and laboratories, high turnover of staff especially in private schools, high workloads, disrespects from parents, students and even government. I made a proverb on the programme. Elo ni teacher ngba, ti o ntuto s’owo ka’wo osu (meaning, how much does a teacher earn that he or she needs to use saliva to count salary). This was a random joke even among teachers when they used to collect their salary in cash. This day, they receive their wages via online money transfer. The proverb however is meant to drive home the paltry nature of the salaries and wages of teachers cum lecturers. I recall the sticker produced by Academic Staff Union of Universities many years ago which has the inscription “My take home pay cannot take me home”. That’s very instructive. On issue of insecurity, according to Daily Trust of October 1, 2022, “The registrar of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, Professor Josiah Ajiboye, said attacks on schools by insurgents have claimed the lives of more than 2,295 teachers in the North East between 2009 and 2022.” The PUNCH in its June 5, 2026 online edition reported that “An estimated 603 students and teachers have been kidnapped in seven mass abductions across schools in Nigeria between March 2024 and May 2026 under President Bola Tinubu, despite the N145bn Safe Schools Initiative.” Recall that on May 15, 2026, a total of 46 persons – seven teachers and 39 students – were abducted from Community High School Ahoro-Esinele and Yawota Baptist Nursery and Primary School in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. Thankfully, most of them were rescued though two teachers were murdered by the bandits.  Michael Oyedokun, was reportedly beheaded, while John Olaleye, was shot dead during the attack. It is noteworthy that some university lecturers have also been abducted in the past. The heavy workloads and low wages have resulted into brain drain and high turnover of teaching staff across our academic institutions. Many education graduates don’t want to teach. The lecturers in tertiary institutions are leaving in droves for greener pasters abroad. Many teachers today take the job as a last resort when better options are not available. Many of the private schools recruit untrained teachers. They side step the federal government policy of having every teacher certified by Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria. Recall that the TRCN regulates the teaching profession in Nigeria by setting standards, accrediting teacher education programmes, registering qualified teachers, and enforcing professional ethics.  It establishes national minimum standards for teacher education and monitors teacher training institutions, including Colleges of Education, university faculties, polytechnic schools of education, and the National Teachers Institute. Unlike in the 20th century when teachers in Nigeria were widely respected and seen as mini-God, in contemporary times, there have been situation where pupils and students openly abuse teachers, bully them and even beat them up. Some irresponsible parents have even gone to school to harass and molest teachers for caning or meting out corporal punishments to their wards and children. Thus, many teachers now work in an atmosphere of fear. Mrs. Comfort Fasunwon is a multiple award-winning teacher in Ondo State, here is an excerpt from what she wrote on her Facebook wall in commemoration of the 2026 World Teachers Day “To my fellow teachers, today.  Teaching is not always easy. There are days when the workload is heavy, resources may be limited, and the results of our efforts may not be immediately visible. Yet we continue to show up, teach, encourage, correct, inspire and believe in our students. Sometimes, the greatest reward of a teacher is not a certificate or trophy. It is seeing a child who once struggled begin to understand. It is watching a student grow in confidence. It is meeting a former student years later and hearing the words, “Ma or sir, you made a difference in my life.” My plead to government at all level as well as private schools’ owners is to ensure that their schools are well resourced and staff welfare is made paramount. Professionalism should be their watchwords. Teachers’ rewards shouldn’t be in heaven; a foretaste of that should be here on earth. Best wishes to fellow teachers and nation builders. Remember the popular song that says “Anyone who hates teachers will homeschool his or her  child” I.G: @jideojong
