20-Year-Old Arrested for Allegedly Macheting Father to Death in Anambra

Police in Anambra State have arrested a 20-year-old man, Pascal Ogbogu, for allegedly hacking his 56-year-old father to death with a machete in Abatete, Idemili North Local Government Area.

The suspect allegedly attacked his father on the evening of August 25 before fleeing the community. He was arrested in the early hours of August 26 through a joint operation involving police operatives, family members and members of the Abatete Vigilante.

Confirming the incident on Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said operatives from the Eziowelle Police Division responded swiftly after receiving a distress call.

According to him, the officers found the victim’s lifeless body lying in a pool of blood with a deep machete wound to the throat.

“The body was evacuated to the mortuary for preservation and autopsy,” Ikenga said.

He explained that the suspect initially escaped after the attack but was tracked down through coordinated efforts by the police and local vigilante members, aided by timely information from community residents.

“The suspect, who reportedly fled the scene after the incident, was apprehended in the early hours of August 26 through the coordinated efforts of the police and members of the Abatete Vigilante,” he said.

Ikenga said the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, commended the prompt response of the police officers, the victim’s family, community members and vigilante personnel for working together to apprehend the suspect.

The police commissioner also sympathised with the bereaved family and directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for a comprehensive investigation.

According to Ikenga, detectives have been tasked with establishing the circumstances surrounding the killing and ensuring that the suspect is prosecuted in accordance with the law.
