About 2, 000 members of the ruling Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in Ijebu East Local Government Area of Ogun State over the weekend defected to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In a well-attended civic reception in honour of decampees from the ACN held at the Ijebu East local government an open ground had PDP chieftains from the three senatorial districts to welcome the decampees into the only opposition party in the state.

The event was another kick off campaign rally of the party ahead of the 2015 general elections where one of the speakers said the party has commenced its strategies to unseat the ruling party, ACN.

Among the speakers at the colourful event was the chairman of the party, Mr. Bayo Dayo, who told the large crowd that the historic event had shown that people of the state were fed up of ACN style of governance.

He said the last local government election had shown that people of the state massively voted for PDP, alleging that the ACN government led by Senator Ibikunle Amosun rigged and manipulated the results in conjunction with the state electoral commission.

He said: “People decamping today are happy everyone of them know PDP is making history. We are in a state that people are not happy saying the want to belong to opposition party. Come 2015 we’ll come back to power.”

However, Ijebu East Chairman of the party, Mr. Akinlabi Agoro, who welcomed decampees to the party said the ACN decampees have shown love and interest to join the PDP, saying the leadership style of Amosun was no longer okay for them.

Mr. Lanre Duduyemi, who led the decampees, said: “We have swept the roads, markets and we have spent money to vote for Amosun to become governor but now the dividend of democracy is far from us.”

He added: “We don’t want to sweep again, we want a caring party with keen interest of members at heart. ACN does not care for us instead we keep receiving pains of taxes, demolition of houses without compensation every day.”

Also, a chieftain of the party, Mr. Kashamu Buruji said if about 2, 000 can decamp to PDP, saying it shows AC N is dead in Ogun State, urging other members to start campaigning for PDP ahead of 2015.
