An 18-year-old man, Abdullahi Aminu, has drowned after falling into a pond at Kofar Gabas in Danbatta Local Government Area of Kano State.
The Kano State Fire Service confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Wednesday by its Public Relations Officer, Saminu Abdullahi, on behalf of the Director, Sani Anas.
According to the statement, the incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon after the victim fell into the pond.
The fire service received a distress call from the Danbatta Fire Station at about 3:28 p.m. from Aminu Lawan, the victim’s father, reporting that his son had drowned.
“Upon receiving the report, we immediately deployed our rescue team to the scene,” the statement quoted Abdullahi as saying.
He said the rescue team recovered the victim from the pond but found him dead.
Abdullahi said authorities had yet to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, adding that an investigation was ongoing.
The fire service later handed over the deceased to the Secretary to the District Head of Danbatta, Alhaji Baba Ado Sarkin Bai.
The service condoled with the victim’s family and urged residents to exercise caution around ponds, waterways and other bodies of water, particularly during the rainy season.
