Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested a 101-year-old great-grandmother, Esther Ogunmabo, for allegedly dealing in illicit drugs in Ilisan, Ogun State.
The centenarian was arrested on Saturday, August 15, with 90 grammes of skunk, a potent strain of cannabis, packaged in retail sachets. She reportedly told NDLEA operatives that she sold the substance to residents in the community.
Ogunmabo explained that she ventured into the illicit drug trade after her provisions shop was destroyed by fire. According to her, one of her daughters, who lives in Lagos, supplies her with the cannabis every four days, which she then sells in small quantities.
Following her arrest, the NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), directed that the 101-year-old suspect be granted bail and subjected to counselling in view of her advanced age.
Her daughter, who was allegedly responsible for arranging the supply of the illicit substance, has also been arrested and is expected to face further investigation.
