A host of current and former Manchester United players have sent messages in support of Sir Alex Ferguson, following the news of his sudden illness that broke on Saturday night.

Club captain Michael Carrick said: “Absolutely devastated to hear about Sir Alex being unwell in hospital. All my thoughts and prayers are with him and his family. Be strong Boss xx”, while former captain Wayne Rooney also commented, saying: “Get well soon Boss. Thoughts with all the family.”

Chris SmallingMarcus RashfordAshley YoungJesse LingardRomelu LukakuLuke Shaw and Scott McTominay were among the current first-team players to send their messages of love and support.

Edwin van der Sar – whose wife Annemarie suffered a brain haemorrhage in 2009 and made a full recovery – posted a poignant message, saying: “Devastated about the news about Sir Alex and knowing all too well about the situation ourselves. Stay strong and hope together with everyone you recover. Edwin & Annemarie.”

Many of his former players, including Peter SchmeichelCristiano RonaldoRuud van Nistelrooy and Robin van Persie, also posted, with Ronaldo saying: “My thoughts and prayers are with you, my dear friend. Be strong, Boss!” Eric Cantona sent a message that read: “All my thoughts, my energy, my minutes and my seconds to you boss. Eric.”

Some referred to the strength of character Sir Alex has shown through his life, with Paul McGrath stating: “My prayers and thoughts are with him and his family. If anyone can pull through this it will be the man himself.”

The outpouring of love and support from so many men who played under Sir Alex through his time at United just serves to highlight how important a figure he has been in so many footballing lives.
