There is currently an ongoing clash between Shiite protesters and security operatives in Maitama Abuja.
El Zakzaky, the leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) was captured and detained by the Nigeria army 2015 after a bloody raid that left over 300 shi’ites dead.
Members of the religious group have been protesting against what they call an unconstitutional detainment of their leader ever since. Today’s protest, at the Federal Capital, took a violent turn which prompted the Nigerian Police to fire live bullets and tear gas canisters to content the agitating protesters.
Tension continues to rise as people are advised to stay indoors for their safety.
